NASA is nearing the launch of its Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, one of the agency’s major new observatories for studying the universe. NASA and SpaceX are targeting August 30, 2026, for the telescope’s launch aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Roman is designed to provide an exceptionally wide view of space while maintaining detailed observations. Its field of view will be at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, allowing scientists to survey enormous areas of the sky more efficiently.

The telescope will investigate some of astronomy’s biggest questions, including the nature of dark energy and dark matter. Scientists will also use Roman to discover and study exoplanets, map galaxies, investigate black holes, and examine objects across the universe.

After launch, Roman is expected to travel to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, approximately one million miles from Earth. Its primary mission is planned to last five years, with the possibility of operating for up to 10 years.
