NASA Expands Its Deep-Space Communication Network

Summary: NASA has completed a new antenna at its Goldstone complex in California, strengthening the Deep Space Network that communicates with spacecraft exploring distant parts of the solar system.
NASA’s ability to communicate with spacecraft millions or even billions of kilometers from Earth has received an important upgrade with the completion of Deep Space Station 23, or DSS-23.
The 34-meter antenna is located at NASA’s Deep Space Network facility in Goldstone, California. The antenna is designed to increase the network’s capacity and support communication with spacecraft operating throughout the solar system.
The Deep Space Network is essential because spacecraft exploring distant worlds cannot communicate directly with ordinary communication systems on Earth. Large antennas receive extremely weak signals sent across enormous distances and transmit commands back to spacecraft.
DSS-23 is a multifrequency beam-waveguide antenna, allowing it to support different frequencies and communication requirements. NASA expects the new infrastructure to strengthen its ability to operate and communicate with current and future deep-space missions.
The upgrade is particularly important as NASA continues expanding robotic exploration, lunar missions, Mars research, and other deep-space projects.
